The Girls Next Door A gripping, edge-of-your-seat crime thriller - edition by Mel Sherratt. Mystery, Thriller & Suspense eBooks @ . Reviews
This story was quite interesting but since it involves young people it might not be as appealing to some readers as it was to me,a teacher.A young police officer must try to find a child who hes been kidnapped. Much of the investigation involves interaction with young people and their unique views of life which can be difficult for adults to comprehend. There are several subplots which add a great deal to the story.
I would like to thank Ms. Mel Sherratt, Bookouture, and Net Galley for an advanced copy of The Girls Next Door in return for an unbiased review.
This novel is definitely Mel being Mel. Mel Sherratt wears a lot of different hats as an author. She can write darn fine thrillers (e.g. Follow the Leader), outstanding crime fiction (as in Somewhere to Hide), and delightful women’s fiction (see The Second Chance Shoe Shop). The Girls Next Door is sort of a combo plate of genres. At its core is a big dose of Ms. Sherratt’s brit grit lit; added to that is a generous overlay of family drama with excellent characterization, a sprinkle of police procedural, and a dash of YA thrown in for good measure. I quite enjoyed the concoction.
Ms. Sherratt introduces us to a new protagonist, DS Eden Berrisford. Eden is a nice person with great social skills--an excellent change of pace from the kickass, deeply scarred, brusque woman protags that I usually seek out. Suffice to say, Eden’s family is under threat in this story, a fact that really ups the stakes for Eden and her colleagues. There are a couple of other subplots, including a murder early on. Ms. Sherratt does a terrific job in exploring the nature of the consequences of these events on the lives and psyches of the people whose families are involved.
Though this isn’t what I would call a traditional thriller, the plot is definitely suspenseful and engaged me right away. It moves well and contains some clever twists. I just have to say that I love Ms. Sherratt’s writings as she has a way of telling a story that strongly speaks to me, though the why of it I find very hard to put into words. I own everything she has written and am so happy I still have several books left to read in the Estate series.
I highly recommend The Girls Next Door to all readers of crime fiction, especially those who value emphasis on the psychological fallout of the crimes on the victims and their families.
Slow and repetitious. The first victim is a mistaken identity (not a spoiler alert, it's a known mistake when the stabbing takes place). And, it's slow. Tells you of the families loving or fearful thoughts over and over again.
I'm not quite sure if I was reading the same book as those who reviewed it and raved about it. It was well written, an easy read, but the lead detective was relegated to a secondary role in her own novel, and it focused a lot more on typical high school drama and teen angst with very little in terms of thrills, twists or turns. It was really just an ok read that I had no trouble putting down a few times. No reflection on the author, just more of a mislabeled genre.
Mel Sherratt knows how to hold your attention with The Girls Next Door. Every time I thought I knew who did what or what would happen next I was shocked and surprised. The intensity in this book kept me up until the wee hours of the night. I loved how some of my favorite books were referenced within the story. I also loved the references of how hard it is to be a single parent raising teenagers in this crazy world. Also how we as parents think we know our children when in truth we really don't know them at all.
I've heard a lot of great things about Mel Sherratt and can understand the praise. I downloaded this book so that I hopefully would enjoy it enough that it would be a new mystery series for me to follow - and it is. Eden, the detective is a single mother and I found her to be very likeable and a credible character. There were a lot of characters to keep track of and at times I had to reread a sentence or two to understand the meaning. It did ramble a bit here and there - too wordy! I also found a couple of repetitions that I didn't feel were necessary. I give this a 4 star and have already downloaded and will read the second one in this series "Don't Look Behind You".
Not a bad book, but way too many stories going on. The story that starts the book gets lost in , what I'm assuming is, the main story. The book jumps around between 4 stories, and in my opinion the author gives away too much too soon thus taking away the suspense. Sorry but it really isn't an edge of your seat thriller.
I'm sorry to be negative, but this was not a gripping edge-of-your-seat thriller. Actually, it was so boring I almost quit reading several times. There were so many characters that I found it hard to keep up with what was going on and who was doing what. The pace finally picked up near the end of the book and had a decent ending. I am a big fan of police procedural books, but there was very little of that aspect in this book.
